The Seattle Gum Wall at Pike Place Market

"DON'T TOUCH ANYTHING!" is all I remember hearing as we came down the alley. It's not an unusual sentiment coming from someone who would consider herself a bit of an overprotective mother, but Lori usually manages to keep her concerns bottled up inside. The Gum Wall in Seattle was too much for her though. It didn't matter how many little bottles of hand sanitizer she had in her purse (and it's usually quite a few), she wanted nothing to do with this so-called tourist attraction.

Of course, that just served as motivation for the rest of us to get a little closer.

Seattle Gum Wall Alley

Located in Post Alley underneath Pike Place Market, the Gum Wall was named the the #2 germiest attraction in the world in 2009 - ranking only behind the Blarney Stone (and surprisingly just ahead of my teenage daughter's bedroom). Now people come from all over to add a little wad of their own to the wall, necessitating efforts to contain it's growth to just one side of the alley.

Originally started by people waiting to get in to the Market Theater whose box office window is part of the wall, the theater staff used to try and clean the Gum Wall off, but back in 1999 the city decided that the wall had become enough of a tourist draw that it should just be allowed to exist. I wonder just how long some of these people had to wait outside the theater to get in? They obviously had a little bit of time on their hands...

...and some of them....well some of them could really use a couple of lessons as to what constitutes romance in the 21st century.

Still, I hope she said yes and I hope they're very happy. I also hope they didn't plan their own reception dinner.

I'm with Lori - that has got to be the most disgusting thing that I have ever seen! It looks like there's gum all over the ground too - did you get out of there without stepping in it?

The gum was definitely all over the ground Lisa, but surprisingly none of it seemed sticky. I can't say I checked very much of it though. I generally tried to avoid stepping on anything colorful.
I can't decide if I'm fascinated or repulsed, but anyway it's great to have the gum wall placed in a historical perspective:)

It is important to keep these things in the correct context isn't it Mette? I'm not entirely sure what context that is, but I'm glad we were able to help you figure it out.

LOL. I'd forgotten about that scene. Very, very applicable to this situation.
Yeah...I've always thought these were gross. But then again, I'm not a fan of gum in general.

Nobody in our family chews gum either Deej. You'd figure, what with it being Seattle and all, that there would be a Starbucks wall somewhere. Perhaps that would be more to your liking.
The place looks disgusting! Is your son now taller than yu - just asking after checking out the photo.

Gee, thanks for picking up on that Leigh! It's not as bad as it looks in the picture (I'm standing a little downhill from the boy) but yes, he does have an inch or two on me these days. I can still put him in a headlock though...I just have to jump to do it.
I'm just like Lori. When we went to Pike Place Market, I "forgot" to mention this place to my kids.

We've skipped the Gum Wall a few times too, but this time we were actually going to see a show at the Market Theatre, so there really wasn't any way to avoid it. At least we got there before the line extended outside. The people who showed up that late for the show really had to pay attention to what they were touching.
