The Quails' Gate Sugar Plum Fair

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads

That's always the point that throws me. I've never known a single child who fell asleep on Christmas Eve with a vision of a sugar-plum in their head. In fact, I don't even know what a sugar-plum is. I like sugar, but I'm not a big fan of plums. How do you know if combining the two is a good idea? Googling doesn't seem to help, as a search for images of "sugar plum" brings results ranging from dusted up flowers to a picture of a naked man on a couch.

...I'm pausing for a minute while half my readers finish Googling "sugar plum".

Last weekend though, I had the chance to figure out once and for all just what a sugar-plum is. One of our local wineries was hosting a "Sugar Plum Fair", and although I don't spend a lot of time at wineries, this became a must-do event in our day. In fact, we decided that it should be a family outing, although we did give the kids an out. Anyone who could convince me that they already knew what a sugar-plum was, didn't have to come.

Now while in the past we may have been guilty of taking our kids places we shouldn't have, I would like it on the record that this was their first visit to a winery. As such they were warned that, since wineries were places for grown-ups, they were expected to be on their best behavior. They would not be allowed to conduct the carol singers...

Sadly though, even though everyone earned a souvenir, the one thing we couldn't find, was a sugar-plum. We found gingerbread, candy canes, apple cider, and a whole lot of these hanging around...

...but not a single sugar-plum anywhere we looked. While it was a little disappointing to be going home without having a clear answer as to what a sugar-plum was, the day itself had to be considered a great success. We spent the day in a beautiful vineyard, had free food and drink all day long, and the scenery....I mean, there couldn't possibly be anything more compelling than the views from this vineyard could there?

I love the view from Quail's Gate so I can well imagine that you had a most excellent day. And at least your son is still going places with you - that may not last much longer especially with little sisters to put with. Looks like you need a truck so you could fit a barrel in the back.

We were trying to decide how far we could get by tipping the barrel over and rolling it as fast as we could, but it was really busy that day and we'd had to park quite a ways away. Otherwise, this story could have had a totally different slant to it.
I love all your posts! So lighthearted and so much fun to read. I always leave with a smile on my face. You make family blogs readable and bearable. ;-)

Thank you Marlys. I'm glad we could make you smile, although I assure you there's plenty of other family blogs out there that are even more lighthearted than us. As scary as that may be to think about.
Quail's Gate looks like a beautiful place - the perfect backdrop for an exciting game of Angry Birds! You should plan a European trip - I'd like to see Angry Birds at the Eiffel Tower, Angry Birds at the Parthenon, Angry Birds at the Leaning Tower of Pisa... :)

P.S. I think sugar plums were a type of candy.

There's going to have to be a whole lot more levels introduced to cover another entire continent with Angry Birds pictures. Although Angry Birds Star Wars did just come out....
I just looked up sugar plums. It's a type of dragee. (Now to go and look up dragee.) I didn't realize Canada had vineyards. And BTW, did you know that there's an Angry Birds theme park somewhere in China?

LOL. Now I can write a whole different column about dragees and not knowing what they are.
Where I live in Canada is covered in vineyards. and what little land isn't growing grapes is growing other fruit. I can understand your confusion though. I would have thought it was too cold to grow anything up here as well.
I heard they were building an Angry Birds theme park in Finland. Have they already built one in China? I might have to plan a trip to check that out.
I like the magnificent view of angry birds, as well. (Even if it's not the right place for grown-ups)

I think adults are allowed around the Angry Birds...we're just not allowed to be any good at it. At least, that's the system I'm working on.
I loved that picture you posted on FB and glad to see a more detailed look of the winery. I feel like a lush now having taken my much younger kids than yours to wineries. They like seeing the vineyards and running around :) This is a beautiful looking vineyard and gorgeous scenery surrounding it. Maybe you should start putting together a Traveling Angry Birds photobook and present it to him during high school graduation :)

By the time he graduates from high school that book would be the size of War and Peace.
